Thanks for the info Jem. We didn't know yacht varnish had a tendency to degrade in too much direct sunlight.

Looks like yacht varnish was a bad choice. That's way too much work (and time) to apply it properly to one Barn Owl nestbox.

We usually build and erect around 8 Barn Owl nestboxes at a time for a given area of farmland. So we're looking for a wood preservative which is quick and easy to apply.

Suggestions anyone ?
