I know a lot more about Yacht Varnish, than I do about the safety / danger of Creosote to Barn Owls, but... If the wood is to be effectively protected by Yacht Varnish, it is necessary to apply the Varnish in several coats. At first, a thinned coat should be applied, and left to soak in and dry thoroughly, then the surface should be rubbed-down with wet & dry sandpaper. Next, a slightly thinned layer of Varnish can be applied, not too thick, and the process repeated. Eventually, when some six or seven coats have been added, the resulting finish should last for several years, in wet, dry, and abrasive conditions, but try to avoid too much direct sunlight.
'Course, why your Barn Owls want to go Sailing is another question ...
