Saw the article,very good, in response to the square nestbox we have used these for nine years and have found them excellent to use and cheap to make.
Another benifit is that they are excellent for ringing adult owls, if you block the enterance hole with a glove or something similar, we have retrapped the same adult at one site for the past four years- it was rung at a natural site a mile away in 1999.
The only change we have is to have the lid hinged with a brass hinge and fastened the other side with a pozi pan screw this means it can only be opened if you wander the countryside with a philips screwdriver/ladder.
This year we have 8 of these boxes used.
