Hallo,
I just treated the outside of a new A-Frame tree box with clear epoxy resin, available from boating shops.

This forms a very hard, thick layer and ought to be highly durable, but it's expensive (ca. £10 for 300ml) and for projects with several boxes it might be wise to reserve it just for problem areas such as joints/roof apex.
